In October 2010, following three years of intensive cancer treatment, fourteen-year-old Alice Pyne was given a terminal prognosis. Determined to make every second count, she started an online blog detailing her hopes and dreams. Alice’s Bucket List went viral, trending worldwide and receiving over 10,000 followers in the first day alone.
Among Alice’s wishes, was the desire to start a charity to enable every terminally-ill child to enjoy a family 'escape'. Alice’s incredible drive and determination saw this dream become a reality - in April 2012, Alice’s Escapes was born.
Equally important on Alice’s list, was to encourage everyone to join a
Bone Marrow Register. Had Alice's match been registered, she might have had a second chance at life. In her remaining time, Alice signed more than 60,000 people onto the register. In June 2012, Alice, then sixteen,
and her sister, Milly, then thirteen, were honoured with
a
British Empire Medal
for their incredible contribution to society. Alice's last public appearance was in late October 2012 when, on national television, she received a
Pride of Britain award. After courageously battling her cancer for almost six years, she gained her wings on 12 January 2013. The secret stash of letters she left behind instructed her family to continue her charity, be kind, eat fondue and look after her precious pup, Mabel.
She'd be so humbled to know that we have now provided over four hundred deserving families with a break and kindness is at the forefront of everything we do. Vicky, along with Alice's sister, Milly, continue their Christmas Eve fondue ritual, followed by Alice's favourite Christmas film, Elf. Mabel remains a very pampered pooch.
We are so very proud to play our part in continuing Alice’s incredible legacy.
